Hi, I’m Steve and I’m an Artistic Illuminator. I handcraft unique lighting—industrial-style lamps from iron pipe fittings, and upcycled lamps from often neglected, vintage items. My pipe lamps take the form of recognisable animals and people, whilst, with my vintage lamps, I keep the aesthetics and original use of the item very much in mind, when upcycling and repurposing them.

I started creating unique, quirky indoor lighting in 2017—initially just a few pieces to help light up my partner’s craft stand at events. Being a child of the 1960s, some of the paraphernalia that I recall from my Dad’s and Granddad’s sheds—paraffin blowtorches, brass Aladdin oil lamps and old, Bakelite valve radios—were now vintage items, often discarded or found languishing at boot fairs. Soon I was salvaging these and making them into stylish lamps.

Then, one day, by chance, I discovered that the iron, galvanised pipe fittings of my youth were still available and, with the trend for industrial and steampunk-style décor, I embarked on designing & making my own range of ‘Pipeman’ character pipe lamps. These started as generic ‘people’ but soon developed into representations of celebrities—sports people, musicians etc. I then began to take commissions for bespoke lamps for special occasions, which are often interesting, challenging and great fun. It was at this point that Wacky Lamps was really born!

With me it’s all about the detail—finding ways of making cold, inorganic iron & brass fittings come to life with character, movement and an essence of personality. This can be achieved in many different ways and is what makes a Wacky Lamps creation truly unique.
